Experience the rugged beauty of Northern Ireland with this challenging 15km loop through Ballycarton Wood and up to the iconic Binevenagh summit. Starting from the Ballycarton Wood car park, you'll tackle a steady ascent on wide forest tracks that provide a solid footing before the terrain transitions into more technical grassy trails near Binevenagh Lake. With 453m of elevation gain, this is a Category 4 hilly route that rewards your climbing with exhilarating ridge running. The descent is particularly spectacular, hugging the edge of the Antrim Plateau; runners should stay focused on the steep drops to the left while enjoying the sweeping views of the Roe Valley and Lough Foyle before descending back into the shelter of the woodland canopy.
The area surrounding Binevenagh is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and holds a significant place in both geological history and modern pop culture. Formed around 60 million years ago by molten lava, the dramatic basalt cliffs were famously used as a filming location for North of the Wall in Game of Thrones. As you run, you’ll be treading on ground that marks the westernmost edge of the Antrim Plateau. Local runners often recommend this route for its unique microclimate—the maritime air coming off the Atlantic can change conditions quickly, so always be prepared for a refreshing sea breeze as you reach the plateau. It’s a quintessential Causeway Coast experience that perfectly blends forest serenity with high-altitude drama.
