This 8.0km loop offers a refreshing blend of woodland trails and wide-open galloping stretches, making it one of the most popular flat runs in York. Starting on the paved Trans-Pennine Trail off Bishopthorpe Road, you’ll enjoy a sheltered warm-up through the leafy canopy of Knavesmire Wood before emerging onto the expansive York Racecourse. The terrain is predominantly paved and exceptionally level, with an almost negligible ascent of just 13m, making it an ideal choice for tempo sessions or runners looking to maintain a consistent cadence. The clockwise loop around the Service Road provides unobstructed views across the "Knavesmire," offering a sense of space that is rare so close to the city center.
Steeped in local history, the Knavesmire has been the home of York’s horseracing since 1731, but its past is even more storied, once serving as the site of the city's public gallows until the early 19th century. Today, the atmosphere is far more vibrant; it is a hub for the York community, hosting the famous Ebor Festival and the weekly York parkrun. While the route is a public favorite, it is essential to check the racing calendar before heading out, as access to the track area is restricted on race days. After your run, you are just a stone's throw from the trendy "Bishy Road" district, perfect for a post-run coffee at one of the many award-winning local cafes.
