Experience one of the most iconic stretches of the Kennet & Avon Canal with this 7.0km out-and-back run from Devizes. Though the total ascent is a modest 66m, don't let the numbers fool you; this hilly route features a distinct descent as you trace the flight of locks downward, followed by a sustained, steady climb on the return leg. The terrain is a mix of gravel towpaths and grassy verges, providing a varied underfoot feel that requires good traction, especially after a typical Wiltshire drizzle. As you navigate the path, you'll be greeted by sweeping views of the Vale of Pewsey and the rhythmic sight of narrowboats traversing the water, making every kilometer of this challenging session feel rewarding.
The Caen Hill Locks are a genuine marvel of Georgian engineering, consisting of 29 individual locks that raise the canal 237 feet over two miles. Built under the supervision of John Rennie in the early 19th century, this "stairway to heaven" was the final link in the canal connecting London to Bristol. While the area is a peaceful haven for local herons and kingfishers, it is a popular spot for walkers and history buffs. For runners, hitting the towpath during the early morning mist not only helps you avoid the weekend sightseers but also offers a breathtaking perspective of the "Long Pound" looking back toward the historic market town of Devizes.
