This 9.6km loop from Devizes offers a quintessential Wiltshire running experience, blending steady climbs with sweeping panoramic rewards. Starting from Roundway Gardens, you’ll head out along the historic Quaker’s Walk before tackling the ascent toward Beacon Hill via the sheltered woodland of Roundway Hill Covert. With roughly 119m of elevation gain, the terrain is a diverse mix of paved paths and rugged trail sections. The final stretch follows a scenic clockwise loop along the Wessex Ridgeway, providing expansive views of the Vale of Pewsey that make every bit of effort during the climb feel worthwhile.
The area surrounding Roundway Hill is steeped in English history, most notably as the site of the Battle of Roundway Down in 1643 during the English Civil War. As you run across these high chalk plateaus, you are traversing ground where Cavalier forces once clashed with Roundheads. Today, the landscape is much more tranquil, serving as a gateway to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Keep an eye out for local paragliders catching thermals off the ridge and the ancient iron age earthworks that dot the horizon, grounding your workout in thousands of years of heritage.
