This gentle 5km loop is a quintessential Wiltshire run, starting in the historic market town of Bradford on Avon. The terrain is wonderfully flat, with only 12 meters of ascent, making it an ideal choice for a recovery run or a tempo session on the towpath. You’ll begin by following the winding River Avon before transitioning onto the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath, reaching the spectacular Avoncliff Aqueduct. The mix of 75% paved surfaces and well-maintained riverside trails offers a reliable footing in most weather conditions, while the return leg uses quiet, scenic roads to lead you back into the heart of town.
Steeped in industrial heritage, this area was once the epicenter of the West of England’s wool trade. As you traverse the Avoncliff Aqueduct, you are crossing a Grade II listed structure designed by John Rennie and completed in 1801, where the canal remarkably carries water over the very river you just ran alongside. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; kingfishers are frequently spotted darting along the canal banks. After your run, the town’s ancient Tithe Barn and its surrounding limestone buildings provide a perfect backdrop for a post-run coffee in one of the many independent cafes that local runners frequent.
