This 12.1km circuit through North Devizes offers a fantastic challenge for runners who enjoy a mix of technical terrain and steady climbs. Starting from the historic market town, you'll navigate a diverse blend of paved streets, rugged tracks, and the iconic Kennet & Avon Canal towpath. With 98m of ascent, the highlight is undoubtedly the climb toward Roundway Hill, where the "hilly" nature of the route truly tests your lungs. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Vale of Pewsey as you loop around the hill cover, feeling the transition from urban pavement to soft Wiltshire trails beneath your feet.
Steeped in English history, the segment leading to Oliver’s Castle takes you directly through the site of the Battle of Roundway Down, a significant 1643 Civil War conflict. As you run across these ancient chalk downlands, you are passing over an Iron Age hillfort, adding a sense of grandeur to your miles. The return leg via the canal provides a flattener finish, allowing you to find a steady rhythm while passing the famous Caen Hill Locks, an engineering marvel nearby. It’s a route that perfectly captures the rural beauty and heritage of Wiltshire, making it a favorite for local club runners and weekend explorers alike.
