Conquering the Black Combe summit offers one of the most rewarding 12.4km loops in Cumbria, blending a deceptive 5km of flat, paved sections with a relentless 572m ascent. Starting from Whicham, runners will find themselves on a mix of grassy tracks and bare earth trails that demand both agility and stamina. Once you leave the valley floor, the climb is significant, taking you up to the 600m peak. The descent is fast and technical, making it a favorite for fell runners looking for a category SL (Short Local) challenge that tests the quads as much as the lungs. Given the exposure above 500m, always be prepared for the characteristic Cumbrian mist to roll in quickly.
Local lore suggests that on a clear day, Black Combe offers the widest view in the British Isles; runners are often treated to sightings of the Isle of Man, the Welsh mountains, and the Scottish borders all from a single vantage point. Positioned on the edge of the Lake District National Park, this area of the South Western Fells has a rugged, isolated feel compared to the busier central peaks. The valley of Whicham itself is steeped in West Coast history, serving as a quiet gateway to the Irish Sea. This route captures the true essence of English fell running—remote, steep, and spectacularly scenic.
