Route Overview & Local Insights

This 5.0km loop around Rydal Water is a quintessential Lake District experience, perfect for runners looking to balance technical trail adventure with effortless lakeside cruising. Starting with a gentle climb onto the historic Coffin Route, you’ll navigate a mix of undulating gravel and rocky sections that reward your effort with sweeping views across the water toward Loughrigg Fell. With an ascent of 87m, the climb is manageable but enough to get the heart rate up before a sweeping descent brings you back to the water’s edge. The return leg is wonderfully flat and fast, following the shoreline where the terrain transitions to softer dirt paths that can get a bit tacky after a classic Cumbrian lakeland rain.

Steeped in literary history, this area was the stomping ground of William Wordsworth, who lived at nearby Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage. The "Coffin Route" itself earns its name from its somber history as the path used to carry the deceased from Ambleside to the consecrated ground at St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere. Today, it serves as one of the most popular trails in the National Park, offering a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier tourist hubs. Keep an eye out for the Rydal Caves on the southern slopes of the lake—a dramatic reminder of the area's slate quarrying heritage—and enjoy the ancient woodland that brackets this stunning circuit.
