Route Overview & Local Insights

This 7.3km loop through the heart of the Lake District offers a quintessential fell running experience, balancing technical challenges with high-speed valley sections. Starting from Rydal, you'll tackle a steady climb toward the iconic Rydal Caves before the terrain shifts to steeper, grassy paths that will test your lungs on the way to the 335m summit of Loughrigg Fell. With 268m of vertical gain, it’s a punchy "Short Local" (SL) categorized route that rewards the effort with an untimed summit section, allowing you to catch your breath while soaking in 360-degree views of Windermere and Grasmere. The descent is a fast, rhythmic mix of rock and grass, tapering into a smooth, paved finish under the canopy of Under Loughrigg Lane.

Steeped in Romantic history, this area was the stomping ground of William Wordsworth, who lived at nearby Rydal Mount and found inspiration in these very fells. The massive caverns you pass early in the run are actually remnants of the Loughrigg Holme slate quarry, a testament to the region's industrial heritage before it became a UNESCO World Heritage site. Running here feels like moving through a living landscape painting; the contrast between the rugged, ancient volcanic rock of the summit and the manicured, sheltered woodlands of the valley floor makes this one of the most atmospheric short routes in Cumbria.
