The Low Skelghyll Out & Back is a punchy 5km road run that perfectly captures the undulating charm of the Lake District. Starting on Holbeck Lane in Ecclerigg, the route is entirely paved but don't let that fool you into thinking it's easy—with 132m of ascent and a hill rating of 4, you’ll be working hard from the get-go. The course follows quiet, winding country lanes that climb steadily toward Low Skelghyll. The effort is well worth it; as you turn to head back, the elevation provides a stunning panoramic perspective over the shimmering waters of Windermere, offering a fast, gravity-assisted finish through some of Cumbria's most serene woodland fringes.
Running through this part of Ambleside feels like stepping into a postcard of English heritage. The route borders the historic Skelghyll Woods, famously home to some of the tallest trees in England, including a massive Douglas Fir that towers nearly 60 meters high. This area has long been a favorite of the Lake Poets and Victorian explorers who sought the "picturesque" views you’ll enjoy on your descent. While the lanes are generally quiet, they remain local arteries for the farming community, so keep an eye out for wandering Herdwick sheep and the occasional tractor as you navigate the emerald hedgerows of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
