This 9.6km loop out of Staveley offers a classic Lake District fell running experience, packing a punch with over 350m of ascent. Starting on paved lanes, the terrain quickly transitions into firm tracks as you climb steadily toward Potter Tarn. As you gain elevation, the ground becomes more technical; expect rougher, uneven grassy sections over Brunt Knott that require focused footwork. Runners will enjoy a true "SL" (Short Long) category feel, where the sustained climbing is rewarded by expansive, airy views across the Kentmere valley before a fast, exhilarating descent through lower farmland and back into the village.
Staveley is widely considered one of the Lake District's premier adventure hubs, sitting at the gateway to the Kentmere Horseshoe. Historically a mill village powered by the River Kent, it has evolved into a mandatory stop for the local running community. The route passes close to ancient drumlin landscapes and offers a glimpse of the rugged beauty that defines Cumbrian fell running. After finishing your effort, most locals head straight to Mill Yard, home to the legendary Wilf’s Café and Hawkshead Brewery, to refuel and swap stories of the climb up Brunt Knott.
