This 5.8km loop offers a rare opportunity to run through the stunning coastal landscape of the South Walney Nature Reserve. The terrain is flat and exceptionally fast, with 5km of the route featuring paved surfaces that are ideal for maintaining a consistent tempo. Starting from the dedicated nature reserve car park, you’ll head out on a scenic circuit that feels worlds away from the industrial heart of Barrow-in-Furness. While the elevation gain is practically zero, runners should be prepared for the coastal elements; the exposed nature of the spit means you'll often be contending with invigorated Irish Sea breezes that turn a simple 5k-plus run into a great test of strength.
Steeped in natural history and managed by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, South Walney is famous for being home to the only grey seal colony in Cumbria. As you navigate the loop, keep an eye out for these charismatic marine mammals hauled out on the sands, alongside a diverse array of migratory birdlife like oystercatchers and sandwich terns. Historically, this area was vital for salt production and gravel extraction, but today it serves as a serene sanctuary. Because it is a sensitive breeding ground, it is essential to stick to the designated paths and check seasonal access restrictions—making this a run where you share the coastline with some of the UK's most precious wildlife.
