Conquering Wansfell Pike is a classic South Lakeland challenge that packs a serious punch over its 7.9km distance. Starting from Old Lake Road, you’ll quickly transition from the tarmac of Ambleside into a rigorous ascent. The climb is steep and unyielding, rewarding your effort with over 400m of vertical gain. Once you reach the summit, the terrain shifts to expansive fell-top paths with technical footwork required as you navigate sections above 500m. The descent through the ancient Skelghyll Wood offers a refreshing change of pace, with softer trails under the canopy providing a faster, flowing finish back towards the village.
Steeped in Lake District history, this route passes through the magnificent Skelghyll Woods, home to some of the tallest trees in Cornwall and England, including impressive Douglas Firs. The summit of Wansfell Pike serves as one of the best vantage points in the region, offering a legendary panoramic view of Windermere stretching out to the south and the sharp peaks of the Langdale Pikes to the west. Local runners know that the weather here can be fickle; while the valley might be still, the "Pike" often catches the full force of the Atlantic winds, making it a perfect training ground for those looking to test their mettle on true Lakeland fell terrain.
