Experience a fascinating blend of coastal air and tranquil woodland on this 6.6km loop through the southeastern outskirts of Ulverston. With a near-flat profile and a 95% paved surface, this route is perfect for runners looking for a steady tempo session or a reflective recovery run. You’ll transition from the rhythmic pavement of the main road into the serene, sheltered grounds of the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre. The route then winds through quiet country lanes and the Low Business Park, eventually linking to the charmingly named Watery Lane. It’s an easy-access circuit that offers a refreshing variety of scenery without the demand of Lakeland's typical steep gradients.
Ulverston is famously the birthplace of Stan Laurel and serves as the traditional gateway to the Lake District, but this specific loop showcases a different side of South Lakeland. The centerpiece of the run is Conishead Priory, a magnificent Victorian Gothic mansion that now houses the meditation centre. As you glide through the woods surrounding the Priory, you are running through history that dates back to the 12th century. This area sits right on the edge of Morecambe Bay, where the tides and light constantly shift, providing a unique maritime atmosphere that distinguishes South Lakeland running from the deep fell valleys further north.
