This 7.5km loop offers a quintessential Lake District running experience, blending crisp woodland climbs with the serene beauty of one of South Lakeland's most photographed spots. Starting from Coniston, you'll tackle a steady ascent of 222m, predominantly on well-maintained paths and a stretch of paved road. The terrain is moderately hilly (rated 4), making it an ideal choice for runners looking to build strength without technical fell-running complexity. As you reach the perimeter of Tarn Hows, the trail levels out, rewarding your efforts with panoramic views of the Langdale Pikes and Helvellyn range before a fast, flowy descent back via the historic Cumbria Way.
Tarn Hows is a masterpiece of Victorian landscape engineering, originally three smaller pools until the Marshall family—owners of the Monk Coniston estate—united them in the 19th century to create the singular stunning body of water you see today. Once owned by Beatrix Potter, who later donated the land to the National Trust to protect it from development, the area remains a sanctuary for local wildlife, including the elusive red squirrel. Running here feels like moving through a living gallery; the mix of larch, spruce, and beech trees provides a vibrant backdrop that shifts from lush greens in summer to fiery coppers in autumn, offering a deep sense of Lakeland history with every stride.
