Clocking in at a substantial 18km, this route through the Kentmere Valley is a masterclass in South Lakeland trail running. Starting from the outdoor-loving village of Staveley, you’ll tackle a mix of roughly 40% paved lanes and rugged bridleways. With nearly 400m of vertical gain, the challenge begins early with a steady climb toward Birk Rigg. The effort is rewarded with a fast, flowing descent into the hamlet of Green Quarter, where the terrain transitions from open fell-side to ancient, walled lanes. The final stretch back to Staveley is delightfully flat, allowing you to open up your stride and flush out the legs after the hilly middle section.
The Kentmere Valley is often described as one of the Lake District's "hidden gems," largely because it is a cul-de-sac with no through-road for cars. This makes it a haven for runners seeking tranquility away from the busier hubs of Windermere or Ambleside. Historically, the valley was a center for slate quarrying and sheep farming, and you’ll pass the distinctive 14th-century Kentmere Hall with its defensive Pele tower. After your run, it is almost local law to stop at the Eagle and Child pub or the Wilf's Cafe in Staveley’s Mill Yard, which has become a legendary post-run refueling spot for the Cumbrian fell running community.
