This 9.6km loop offers a quintessential South Lakeland trail running experience, blending steady climbs with breathtaking limestone ridge running. Starting from Brigsteer Road, you’ll tackle a moderate 184m of ascent as you sweep across the dramatic escarpments of Scout Scar and Cunswick Scar. The terrain is a mix of well-trodden grassy paths and limestone pavement, providing a firm but natural feel underfoot. Runners will be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views that stretch across the Lyth Valley toward the snow-capped Lakeland fells in the north and the glittering sands of Morecambe Bay to the south. The final stretch brings variety to your gait as you navigate rolling fields and the manicured fringes of the local golf course.
Steeped in local history, the "Mushroom" shelter on Scout Scar is a must-see landmark; built in 1912 to commemorate the coronation of King George V, it serves as a topographic guide, pointing out the various peaks visible on the horizon. Cunswick Fell offers a quieter, more rugged atmosphere compared to its neighbor, characterized by its unique "Grip" and "Clint" limestone formations that have been shaped over millennia. This area is a haven for biodiversity, so keep an eye out for rare orchids and the vibrant flutter of the High Brown Fritillary butterfly during the warmer months. As you cross back over the A591, you are effectively transitioning from the wilder limestone uplands back into the pastoral charm that defines the outskirts of Kendal.
