This 12.1km circuit through South Lakeland is a true fell runner's challenge, blending steep technical climbs with breathtaking tarn-side recoveries. Starting with a sharp wake-up call on tarmac, the route quickly transitions into steady woodland tracks before emerging onto the rugged open fells. With 427m of ascent, the climb to Lingmoor Fell summit is a series of rolling peaks that test your rhythm before a demanding, technical descent toward Blea Tarn. Runners should be prepared for rocky, uneven terrain and a final valley stretch that, despite being closer to sea level, maintains a persistent undulating character that keeps the legs working until the final downhill sprint.
Lingmoor Fell serves as a dramatic physical divider between Great Langdale and Little Langdale, offering some of the most iconic panoramic views of the Langdale Pikes in all of Cumbria. The area is steeped in geological history, with "Lingmoor" taking its name from the Old Norse word 'lyng' meaning heather, which blankets the fell in vibrant purple during the late summer months. As you pass Blea Tarn, you are running through a site of Special Scientific Interest, largely untouched since the last ice age. The unpredictable Lakeland weather means the mood of the landscape can shift from serene to formidable in minutes, a characteristic that has drawn poets and adventurers to these silver-grey crags for centuries.
