This 4.8km loop offers a quintessential South Lakeland trail experience, packing a punchy 159m of ascent into a relatively short distance. Starting from the bridge behind Staveley Mill Yard, you'll begin with a mixture of soft paths and quiet lanes before reaching Hillside Cottage. From here, the terrain shifts significantly as you tackle a steep, grassy climb onto the fells. Once you conquer the ascent, you're rewarded with a breathtaking ridge run across Reston Scar, offering expansive panoramas of the surrounding Cumbrian landscape. The descent is fast and technical, bringing you back down to the road for a flat finish that is perfect for a final sprint.
Reston Scar is a beloved local landmark overlooking the vibrant village of Staveley, often referred to as the gateway to the Kentmere Valley. Runners in this area are following in the footsteps of Lake District fell-running legends, as Staveley serves as a central hub for the outdoor community. After your run, it is almost a local rite of passage to visit the Mill Yard, home to the award-winning Hawkshead Brewery and More? The Artisan Bakery. The area perfectly blends the industrial heritage of the former wool and wood-turning mills with the rugged, natural beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage site that surrounds it.
