This 5.6km out-and-back route offers a quintessential South Lakeland running experience, packing a punchy 145m of ascent into a relatively short distance. Starting with an immediate challenge, you'll climb past the limestone scars of Kettlewell Crag onto Kendal Fell before enjoying a brief, flowing descent. The terrain is a mix of well-trodden tracks and soft grassy paths that feel great underfoot, though they can get slick after a Cumbrian downpour. The final push up to the summit of Cunswick Fell rewards you with a panoramic loop of the fell top, providing a perfect vantage point to catch your breath before the fast, technical return leg back toward Kendal.
Steeped in geological and local history, Cunswick Fell is part of the distinctive limestone escarpment that defines the western edge of Kendal. Runners will pass through areas that have been grazed for centuries, and the "Kendal Mint Cake" town itself has long used these fells as a training ground for legendary fell racers. On a clear day, the summit provides arguably the best views in the southern Lakes, offering a stunning 360-degree sweep that includes the distant Howgills, the Kent Estuary, and the high peaks of the Lake District National Park. It is a favorite spot for locals looking for a quick trail fix without the logistical hassle of the deeper valleys.
