Experience the most demanding and dramatic section of the legendary Bob Graham Round with this 25.6km "Leg 3" trek from Dunmail Raise to Wasdale Head. As a pure fell running challenge, you’ll encounter zero pavement and a staggering 1,647m of ascent, tackling some of the Lake District's most iconic summits including the Langdale Pikes and Bowfell. The route culminates at Scafell Pike, the roof of England, before navigating the notorious Broad Stand or Lord's Rake crossing to Scafell. Runners should be prepared for technical scree slopes, steep rocky climbs, and complex navigation that becomes exceptionally difficult when the Cumbrian mist rolls in. It is a true test of mountain craft and endurance in the heart of South Lakeland.
The Bob Graham Round is steeped in fell-running folklore, named after the Keswick guesthouse owner who, in 1932, first completed a 42-peak circuit within 24 hours. Leg 3 is often considered the "crux" of the round, traversing the rugged Central and Southern Fells. This landscape was the playground of legendary runners like Joss Naylor and continues to be a pilgrimage site for those seeking the ultimate mountain challenge. Beyond the physical feat, runners are treated to ancient volcanic geology and breathtaking views into the deep glacial troughs of Great Langdale and Wasdale, the latter being home to England's deepest lake and the birthplace of British rock climbing.
