Route Overview & Local Insights

Starting from the Ulverston train station, this 9.6km loop offers a fantastic blend of urban accessibility and wild, limestone landscape. The route features a steady ascent of about 103 meters, predominantly as you climb toward the plateau of Birkrigg Common. Approximately 45% of the path is paved, making it a "multi-terrain" experience where you transition from town tarmac to grassy hill paths. Runners will find the terrain moderately hilly, but the effort is rewarded at the summit where a generous untimed section allows you to catch your breath and enjoy an uninterrupted 360-degree panorama of the Furness Peninsula and the Lakeland fells.

Birkrigg Common is a site steeped in ancient history and local legend, most notably home to the Druid’s Temple—a Bronze Age double stone circle that overlooks Morecambe Bay. As you traverse this South Lakeland gem, you’re running through a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for millennia. The area is famous for its vibrant yellow gorse and roaming fell ponies, providing a quintessential Cumbrian backdrop. Whether you are chasing a new PR or enjoying a steady recovery run, the descent back toward the station offers sweeping views of the Hoad Monument, Ulverston’s iconic replica of the Eddystone Lighthouse, guiding you back into the heart of this historic market town.
