This 10km loop offers a quintessential South Lakeland trail experience, perfect for runners who want the dramatic vistas of the fells without a technical summit scramble. Starting from the lush greenery of Rothay Park in Ambleside, you'll immediately tackle a punchy tarmac climb that gets the heart rate soaring before transitioning onto rugged, undulating Lakeland paths. With 231 meters of ascent, the route is classified as a "hilly" Category SL (Short Local) fell run, balancing challenging gradients with fast, flowing descents. You'll traverse the famous Loughrigg Terrace—providing one of the most photographed views in the Lake District—before sweeping down to the serene shores of Rydal Water and finishing on the gentle, paved stretch of Under Loughrigg Lane.
Steeped in literary and geological history, this area was a favorite haunt of the Lake Poets; William Wordsworth famously walked these very paths, drawing inspiration from the interplay of light on Loughrigg Tarn and Rydal Water. The terrain itself tells a story of ancient volcanic activity and glacial carving, resulting in the distinctive "craggy" landscape you'll navigate. While the route feels wonderfully wild, it remains highly accessible from Ambleside, a town renowned as the hub of British fell running. Keep an eye out for the historic "coffin levels" near Rydal and the vibrant purple heather that blankets the slopes in late summer, making every kilometer of this circular route feel like a step through a living postcard.
