This 9.2km loop from Helsington offers a quintessential Cumbrian fell running experience without the extreme technicality of the high peaks. Classified as a "Short Local" (SL) fell race, the course features 164m of ascent, characterized by two primary climbs on firm, grassy paths and exposed limestone pavement. Runners will face a steady pull onto Helsington Barrows before tackling the climb to the iconic Mushroom shelter. The terrain is a mix of approximately 50% paved sections and open fell, making it a fast, hilly challenge that rewards those who can maintain momentum through the undulating transitions and the final steady descent toward Brigsteer Road.
Scout Scar is one of the most beloved viewpoints in the Lake District, famously offering a "360-degree" panorama that stretches from the Lakeland fells to the Howgills and the Yorkshire Dales. The area is geologically significant for its carboniferous limestone escarpment, where short, springy turf makes for excellent running underfoot. Local runners often refer to the "Mushroom" at the summit—a circular stone shelter built in 1912 to commemorate the coronation of King George V—as the perfect benchmark for timing intervals. Passing through this ancient landscape, you'll feel the historical weight of the old packhorse routes that once connected the market town of Kendal to the coastal villages.
