Tackle the heart of the Howgill Fells with this invigorating 5.7km loop starting from Joss Lane in Sedbergh. While the distance may seem short, the 354m of vertical gain transforms this into a challenging fell run that tests your lungs and legs in equal measure. You'll follow the Dales High Way on a steady, steep ascent toward the summit of Winder. Once at the top, you are rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District peaks in the distance. The descent takes you westward along a technical lower path flanking a traditional stone wall, offering a fast but rugged return to the village. Be prepared for high-altitude conditions, as the route pushes above 500m where the weather can shift from sunshine to mist in minutes.
Sedbergh is renowned as England’s "Book Town," but for runners, it is more famously the home of the historic Three Peaks Race and the legendary Joss Naylor’s many exploits. This specific route climbs Winder, the "home fell" of the town, which has served as a training ground for generations of world-class fell runners. The terrain is quintessentially Howgill—smooth, steep, grass-covered hills that lack the crags of the Lakes but offer a unique, rolling intensity. After your run, locals recommend stopping at one of the traditional pubs on Main Street to refuel, where the fell running culture is deeply woven into the local history and conversation.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
