Route Overview & Local Insights

This 20.5km clockwise circuit from Glenridding is a quintessential Lake District fell running experience, packing a substantial 896m of vertical gain. The initial stretch through Patterdale allows for a decent warm-up on paved and hard-packed surfaces before the real work begins. The ascent via Grisedale offers a stunning, more secluded approach to the Helvellyn massif compared to the tourist tracks, transitioning into rugged, technical singletrack. Once you crest the ridge and bag the summit of Helvellyn, the route traverses over Whiteside, requiring nimble footwork across loose scree and rocky outcrops. It’s an "SL" (Short Long) category-style fell run that demands respect for the elements and solid mountain skills, rewarding runners with a quad-burning descent back into the valley on a mix of technical rock and fast, grassy lines.

Glenridding and the Patterdale valley serve as the historic gateway to the Eastern Fells, sitting in the shadow of the mighty Helvellyn—England’s third-highest peak. This area was once a hub for lead mining, particularly at the Greenside Mine, and many of the trails you'll traverse follow the old paths carved by miners and shepherds centuries ago. From the summit, you’ll enjoy panoramic views that stretch across the shimmering waters of Ullswater, often cited as England's most beautiful lake. Running here isn't just about the physical challenge; it’s about moving through a landscape that inspired the Romantic poets and shaped the very foundation of modern fell running culture in the UK.
