Tackle the heart of the Lake District with this 12.0km loop from Patterdale, a route that strikes a perfect balance between rugged fell running and scenic lakeside trails. With 425m of vertical gain, runners will face a stiff climb out of Rooking before being rewarded with a flowing descent into the quiet, often overlooked valley of Boredale. The terrain is a true mix of technical singletrack and fast-rolling paved sections, concluding with a stunning stretch along the Ullswater Way. Expect some technical underfoot conditions on the eastern shore of the lake, where proper trail shoes are essential to navigate the rocky sections while soaking in the views of Helvellyn across the water.
Patterdale serves as a historic gateway for Lakeland explorers, sitting at the base of the Kirkstone Pass and once serving as a vital link for lead mining transport in the 19th century. As you run through Boredale, you are passing through one of the most tranquil valleys in the National Park, largely untouched by the heavy tourist traffic found in nearby Glenridding. This route follows ancient bridleways and paths that have been used by shepherds for generations, offering a glimpse into the traditional Cumbrian way of life. Finishing along the Ullswater Way connects you to the legendary landscape that inspired William Wordsworth’s most famous poetry, making every mile feel steeped in literary and natural history.
