The Greenburn Round is a quintessentially rugged Lake District trail run, clocking in at 13.1km with a substantial 579m of vertical gain. Starting from the heart of Grasmere, this anticlockwise loop transitions quickly from quiet valley lanes to the technical, grassy slopes of Steel Fell. Runners can expect a demanding mix of terrain, from the steady grind up to Calf Crag to the undulating, often boggy moorland tracks leading toward Gibson Knott. The highlight for many is the crossing of Helm Crag (the famous "Lion and the Lamb"), where rocky singletrack and steep descents test your technical footwork. It is a perfect intermediate fell run that balances hard climbing with panoramic ridge-top cruising.
Steeped in literary and geological history, this route encircles the quiet valley of Greenburn, far from the denser tourist crowds of nearby Windermere. As you navigate the ridge, you are running through the landscapes that inspired William Wordsworth and the Romantic poets, who lived and worked in the valley below. The prominent rock formations atop Helm Crag are some of the most recognizable silhouettes in the National Park, having served as landmarks for walkers and fell runners for centuries. Local runners know that while the ascent is steep, the views over Easedale Tarn and the central fells are some of the most rewarding in the southern Lakes, especially during the late afternoon when the light hits the bracken-covered slopes.
