Starting from the charming coastal town of Grange-over-Sands, this 6.2km loop offers a punchy 177m ascent that rewards runners with some of the most dramatic views in the Lake District. The route begins with a steady tarmac climb that quickly transitions into rugged trails as you crest Hampsfell. You’ll navigate a mix of paved surfaces and natural paths, crossing the iconic limestone pavement which requires nimble footwork. The final stretch provides a refreshing descent through the canopy of Eggerslack Wood, offering a sheltered, technical trail finish that brings you right back to your starting point.
Hampsfell is steeped in local fell-running history and is home to 'The Hospice,' a stone shelter built in 1846 by the Vicar of Cartmel to provide refuge for travelers. As you reach the summit, keep an eye out for the oversized compass pointer on the roof of the Hospice; it identifies the surrounding peaks of the Lakeland fells and the vast expanse of Morecambe Bay. This area is famous for its unique karst landscape, where the weathered limestone creates "clints" and "grykes," making it a site of significant geological interest and a favorite training ground for Cumbrian hill runners looking to sharpen their technical skills.
