This 9.3km scenic loop from Grange-over-Sands is a local favorite for runners looking to challenge their climbing legs. Starting with a steady tarmac ascent out of the town, the route quickly transitions onto rugged trails leading up to the summit of Hampsfell. With 242m of vertical gain, it is classified as a hilly run, but the reward is a spectacular traverse across a distinct limestone pavement. As you descend towards the quiet hamlet of Hampsfield, expect technical footing underfoot before finishing your effort with a fast, sheltered section through the atmospheric canopy of Eggerslack Wood. It is a fantastic mix of hard-packed paths and natural Lakeland terrain.
Grange-over-Sands itself is a charming Edwardian seaside town that sits on the edge of the Morecambe Bay tidal flats, offering a unique microclimate in the Lake District. The Hampsfell summit is home to "The Hospice," a solid limestone tower built in 1846 by the Vicar of Cartmel to provide shelter for travelers. From the top, runners can enjoy one of the best 360-degree views in Cumbria, stretching from the high fells of the Lake District to the north across the vast sands of the bay to the south. Running through Eggerslack Wood adds a touch of history too, as these ancient woodlands have been a cornerstone of the local landscape for centuries.
