Tackle a classic Cumbrian challenge on this 9.5km loop through the Whitbarrow Nature Reserve. Starting near Crosthwaite and Lyth, this route offers a fantastic mix of terrain for runners who enjoy a bit of everything. You'll begin with a gradual ascent through lush, sheltered woodland where the trails are relatively soft, but stay alert as you transition onto the open limestone plateau. The climb toward Lord’s Seat is steady but rewarding, reaching an elevation that provides sweeping views. Expect the underfoot conditions to shift from forest loam to technical, rocky limestone pavement—steady footing is essential here, especially on the descent where stony paths meet slicker grassy sections. It’s a category SL (Short Local) fell run that perfectly balances physical effort with spectacular scenery.
The Lyth Valley is famous for its Damson orchards, but for runners, the "White Scar" of Whitbarrow Scar is the real local icon. This limestone massif is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the finest botanical sites in southern Cumbria. As you run along the ridge toward Lord's Seat, you are traversing a landscape shaped by millions of years of geological shifts, resulting in the rare "limestone pavement" features you'll navigate underfoot. This area feels wonderfully remote despite being so accessible from the southern Lake District, offering a quieter, more ancient atmosphere than the high central fells. Local runners know to keep an eye out for the rare butterflies and orchids that thrive in this unique microclimate during the spring and summer months.
