This 9.0km loop from Staveley offers a quintessential Lake District fell running experience without the extreme technicality of the higher peaks. Classified as an SL course, you’ll tackle a 336m ascent that primarily utilizes grassy trails and rugged farm tracks. The climb up Brunt Knott is a steady burn through pastoral fields framed by historic dry stone walls, transitioning from packed earth to looser stony footing as you gain elevation. The reward at the summit is a spectacular panoramic view of the Kentmere Horseshoe and the rolling Cumbrian landscape, followed by a fast, flowing descent that lets you open up your stride on well-trodden paths and quiet country lanes.
Starting in the vibrant village of Staveley, runners are at the gateway to the Kentmere Valley, an area steeped in traditional Lakeland industry and outdoor culture. Historically known for its wool and wood-turning mills powered by the River Kent, Staveley has evolved into a modern hub for mountain athletes and home to the famous Hawkshead Brewery and Eagle & Child pub—perfect spots for some post-run refueling. This route is a favorite for local fell runners during the winter months, offering a resilient terrain that holds up well even when the higher fells are shrouded in mist or heavy snow.
