This 7.5km loop offers an quintessential Lake District trail running experience, blending the manicured beauty of Tarn Hows with the rugged, technical terrain of Black Fell. Starting with a steady ascent, you’ll tackle 237m of elevation that rewards you with sweeping views of the Coniston Fells and the Langdales. The terrain is a mix of well-maintained gravel tracks around the water and more challenging, undulating fell paths that can be boggy after rain. It is a "hilly" category route that serves as a perfect introduction for road runners looking to transition to fell running, providing enough bite to test your legs without being overly intimidating.
Tarn Hows is one of the most photographed spots in England, but many visitors don't realize it is actually a man-made wonder. Originally three smaller pools, it was transformed in the 19th century by the Marshall family, who planted the distinctive larch and spruce trees that give the area its alpine feel. This land was eventually bought by Beatrix Potter, the famed author and conservationist, who later bequeathed it to the National Trust to ensure its beauty remained untouched. As you climb toward Black Fell, you are running through a landscape steeped in literary history and Victorian landscape design, overlooking the deep waters of Coniston Water where Donald Campbell famously chased speed records.
