The Holmfirth Round offers a quintessential Yorkshire trail experience, blending 16.4km of challenging terrain with breathtaking views across the Kirklees countryside. This semi-paved (70%) loop is characterized by its "hilly" profile, featuring four significant climbs and descents as you navigate the steep valley walls surrounding the town. Runners can expect a mix of fast road sections and rugged bridleways; however, with roughly 30% of the course off-road, be prepared for technical footwork and muddy patches on the tracks during the wetter months. It is a fantastic test of strength and stamina for those looking to conquer a serious ascent of 334m.
Steeped in Gritstone heritage, Holmfirth is perhaps best known globally as the filming location for "Last of the Summer Wine," but for local runners, it is a gateway to the Pennines. This route takes you through the heart of the Holme Valley, passing through ancient weaver’s settlements and skirting the edges of the Peak District National Park. As you climb out of the valley, you'll see the iconic Victoria Tower on Castle Hill in the distance, a landmark that has watched over these hills since 1899. Running here feels like moving through a living gallery of industrial history and wild northern beauty.
