This 6.0km out-and-back route offers a perfectly flat, tranquil escape through the heart of Calderdale. Starting in the bustling canal basin of Sowerby Bridge, runners follow the well-maintained towpath of the Rochdale Canal toward Luddendenfoot. With zero ascent, this is an ideal course for those looking to maintain a steady tempo or enjoy an easy recovery run. The terrain is consistent and easy underfoot, providing a scenic corridor where you can focus on your stride while passing colorful narrowboats and local wildlife along the water’s edge.
Steeped in industrial heritage, Sowerby Bridge was once a vital hub for the Yorkshire wool trade, where the Rochdale and Calder & Hebble Navigation canals meet. As you run toward Luddendenfoot, you’re retracing a historical transport artery that helped power the Industrial Revolution. The area is famous for its stunning valley views and "dark skies," and the village of Luddendenfoot itself was once home to Branwell Brontë, the brother of the famous literary sisters, who worked at the local railway station. After your run, the refurbished canal basin offers some of the best independent cafes and pubs in West Yorkshire for a well-earned post-run treat.
