Route Overview & Local Insights

Starting from the charming village of Ripponden, this 7.7km loop offers a fantastic blend of paved sections and rugged Yorkshire trails. With an ascent of 118m, the route provides a gentle challenge that rewards runners with expansive views across the water. You’ll head out past Ryburn Reservoir before embarking on an atmospheric anticlockwise circuit of Baitings Reservoir. The terrain is varied enough to keep your legs engaged—expect some steady inclines and a mix of hard-packed paths and road sections that showcase the wild, windswept beauty of the Pennines.

Calderdale is steeped in industrial heritage, and this run takes you through the heart of its hydraulic history. Baitings Reservoir was completed in 1956 to supply the growing textile towns downstream, and when the water levels drop, you can sometimes spot the remains of an old packhorse bridge that once linked these valleys. Running here feels like stepping back in time, as the route traces the ancient boundary lines of the West Riding. It is a quintessential local favorite, offering a sense of isolation and peace just a stone's throw from the vibrant grit and character of Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge.
