Push your limits on this 6.6km "Short Local" (SL) fell-style loop starting from the vibrant market town of Todmorden. This route is a true Calderdale classic, demanding respect with its 258m of vertical gain. Runners will encounter a diverse mix of terrain, transitioning from paved valley lanes to rugged farm tracks and soft grassy paths as you climb toward the gritstone high ground. The "Level 4" hilliness profile means your lungs will certainly feel the burn on the ascent, but the reward is a rapid, technical descent that offers spectacular panoramic views over the Upper Calder Valley.
The Whirlaw Stones themselves are a geological marvel, consisting of weathered gritstone outcrops that have watched over this valley for millennia. This area is steeped in Pennine history; you'll be running through landscapes that once fueled the Industrial Revolution, passing ancient dry-stone walls and remote hill farms that feel worlds away from the town below. Locally known for its unpredictable weather and "clog-hardened" terrain, Todmorden provides the perfect gateway to these wilder moorland fringes, making it a favorite training ground for some of the UK's most resilient fell runners.
