Prepare for a punchy 5.5km loop that pack a real challenge into a short distance. Starting from the valley floor in Calderdale, this route features a significant 200m ascent that will test your hill-climbing lungs immediately. The terrain is primarily paved, making it accessible even in wetter weather, though the initial steep gradient demands respect. Once you reach the ridge, the path levels out across the moorland, offering a glorious flat stretch where you can open up your stride and admire the panoramic views of the Pennines before a technical, steep descent leads you back down toward the valley on a well-maintained track.
The centerpiece of this run is the iconic Stoodley Pike Monument, a 121-foot tall monolith that has dominated the skyline above Todmorden since 1856. Replacing an earlier structure built to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon, the current tower is a local landmark for walkers and fell runners alike. As you run this historic path, you are treading through the heart of West Yorkshire's industrial heritage, where the rugged gritstone landscape once powered the mills of the Calder Valley. On a clear day, the summit offers visibility across the plateau toward the Dark Peak, making the strenuous climb feel entirely worth the effort.
