Conquer the rugged beauty of the Peak District on this challenging 9.2km loop through the dramatic landscape of Ramsden Clough. Runners should prepare for a demanding start with a steep lane climb that quickly tests the lungs and legs before transitioning into a mix of gritty tracks and soft grassy paths. With nearly 300 meters of vertical gain, the majority of the ascent is conquered by the time you reach the plateau near the wind farm. At elevations exceeding 500m, you’ll experience true moorland running—expect sweeping vistas, variable terrain that shifts from 30% paved lane to technical natural trails, and exposure to the elements that makes this a quintessential Northern English fell-running experience.
Located in the heart of the Calder Valley, this route sits on the doorstep of Hebden Bridge, a town steeped in industrial heritage and a legendary hub for the UK’s fell running community. Historically, these trails served as ancient packhorse routes and access paths for the local textile mills that once dotted the cloughs below. As you run past the modern wind turbines at the summit, you are traversing a landscape where traditional gritstone landscape meets 21st-century green energy. Given the high altitude and the erratic weather patterns of the South Pennines, local runners advise always carrying a waterproof shell, even if the valley looks clear when you set off from the trailhead.
