The Altar Lane Loop is a rewarding 6.5km circuit that packs a punch, making it a favorite for Bradford runners looking to build strength and stamina. Starting from Ireland Terrace, you’ll tackle a challenging 175-meter ascent within the first 2km as you climb Altar Lane. The effort is well worth it; once you reach the summit, the terrain transitions into a more forgiving mix of woodland paths and grassy trails around the scenic St Ives Estate. With nearly 200m of total elevation gain and a mix of paved surfaces and soft underfoot tracks, this route offers a fantastic hilly workout that concludes with a fast, satisfying downhill finish back toward the start.
Located on the fringes of Bingley and Bradford, the St Ives Estate is a hidden gem steeped in local history. This 500-acre country park was once an ancestral home and is now a cherished public space featuring the serene Coppice Pond and the manicured fairways of the St Ives Golf Club. Running through this area feels like a step back in time, as you pass ancient woodlands and Victorian-era features. It’s a popular spot for local trail runners who enjoy the variety of the landscape, providing a perfect natural escape from the urban bustle of West Yorkshire while offering some of the best panoramic views over the Aire Valley.
