This 7.6km loop is a quintessential Yorkshire fell running experience, starting with a punchy climb from the iconic White Wells Spa. With 225m of vertical gain and a significant portion of the route remaining off-road, runners can expect a mixture of gravel tracks, rugged peat paths, and technical heather-lined singletrack. Reaching heights of over 500m at Rombald’s Moor, this "SL" (Short Long) course offers wide-open vistas of the Wharfe Valley, but the exposed terrain means you’ll be dancing with the elements. It’s a hilly challenge that rewards the lungs and the legs with a fast, descending finish back toward the Victorian spa town of Ilkley.
Steeped in folklore and famous for the unofficial Yorkshire anthem ‘On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at’, this landscape is as historic as it is beautiful. As you summit Rombald’s Moor, you are running over ground that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age; keep an eye out for the ancient "Cup and Ring" marked stones scattered across the plateau. The starting point at White Wells itself dates back to the 18th century, once a site for "taking the waters" to cure ailments. Today, it serves as a beacon for local runners who thrive on the grit and beauty of the Bradford district’s most beloved wild upland.
