This 6.6km out-and-back journey along the Downs Link offers one of the most accessible and tranquil running experiences near Horsham. Following a perfectly flat disused railway line, the route is predominantly paved and ideal for tempo sessions, recovery runs, or runners looking for a mud-free surface during the wetter months. Starting in the charming village of Slinfold, you’ll enjoy a straight, tree-lined corridor that provides excellent shelter from the wind and sun. With zero elevation gain, it is a fantastic "PB" stretch where you can find a rhythm and maintain a consistent pace through the West Sussex countryside before turning around at Mill Bridge.
Local runners cherish this section of the Downs Link for its blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The trail follows the path of the old Cranleigh Line, a railway that once connected Guildford to Horsham before the "Beeching Axe" closed it in the mid-1960s. As you cruise along the trail, keep an eye out for remnant railway markers and the Victorian architecture of the old Slinfold station. The area is a haven for local wildlife; don't be surprised to spot deer in the adjacent fields or hear the distinct call of woodland birds. After completing your run, the village of Slinfold offers a quintessential English setting for a post-run coffee or a visit to the local Red Lyon pub.
