This 7.5km loop offers an authentic South Downs experience, starting from the historic town of Steyning and climbing steadily toward the iconic Chanctonbury Ring. With 186m of ascent, expect some challenging "hilly" sections that will test your glutes, though the terrain is a manageable mix of 25% paved surfaces and well-trodden chalk trails. As you join the South Downs Way and descend back via Mouse Lane, you'll be treated to sweeping panoramic views across the Weald and the English Channel, making the elevation gain well worth the effort for any trail enthusiast.
Steyning itself is a quintessential Sussex town with deep roots stretching back to the Anglo-Saxon era, once serving as a significant port on the River Adur. Running through Mouse Lane feels like stepping back in time; this ancient "sunken lane" is flanked by steep banks and overhanging trees, creating a cool, atmospheric canopy for your cool-down. Keep an eye out for the prehistoric hill fort at Chanctonbury Ring, a site shrouded in local folklore and famous for its crowning circle of beech trees planted in the 18th century.
