The Middleton Cheney - Chacombe loop is a quintessential English countryside run, spanning 6.1km with a moderate 81m of ascent. Starting from the historic village of Middleton Cheney, the route transitions quickly from paved edges to the rugged charm of the Jurassic Way. Runners will navigate a mix of grassy footpaths and uneven trail terrain that keeps the legs engaged. The standout feature is the clever loop near Chacombe, which introduces a steady climb that tests your lungs but rewards you with sweeping, panoramic views across the rolling hills of South Northamptonshire. It’s an ideal distance for a mid-week trail blast or a brisk weekend circuit when you want to trade the pavement for some fresh air and open fields.
Middleton Cheney and its neighbor Chacombe are steeped in local history, sitting on the borders of Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire. As you follow the Jurassic Way, you are running along a historic long-distance path that follows the limestone escarpment across England. Middleton Cheney itself has roots dating back to the Domesday Book, and the area was famously the site of a significant skirmish during the English Civil War in 1643. Today, that turbulent history has been replaced by peaceful, rhythmic rural life, making it a favorite spot for local hill-seekers and cross-country enthusiasts looking to escape the hustle of nearby Banbury.
