This 6.9km circuit offers a refreshing mix of industrial heritage and lush greenery, perfect for runners looking for a flat, accessible route in the Heart of England. Starting with smooth paved sections through local Dudley streets, the path quickly transitions onto the tranquil towpaths of the regional canal network. With only 16 meters of total ascent, this is an ideal course for consistent pacing or a sustained tempo run. You'll spend half the journey on paved surfaces and the other half navigating the well-maintained trails of Saltwells Nature Reserve, where the tree canopy provides excellent shelter from the wind and sun.
Saltwells Nature Reserve is one of the UK’s largest urban nature reserves and a true hidden gem within the Black Country UNESCO Global Geopark. As you run through the ancient woodland of Saltwells Wood, you’re passing over a landscape shaped by hundreds of years of coal mining and clay extraction, now reclaimed by nature. The canals you traverse were once the lifeblood of the industrial revolution, once bustling with narrowboats transporting raw materials. Today, they serve as a serene corridor for local wildlife, where you’re more likely to spot a kingfisher or a grey heron than a coal barge, providing a peaceful backdrop to your Dudley training miles.
