This 7.9km loop offers a refreshingly flat and fast experience through the heart of Cheshire’s scenic countryside, boasting a negligible 11m of ascent. Runners will enjoy a seamless blend of surfaces, primarily following the well-maintained gravel and paved sections of the Trans-Pennine Trail and the historic Bridgewater Canal towpath. While the route feels delightfully off-road and immersed in nature, the 100% paved designation ensures reliable footing, making it an ideal choice for a tempo run or a steady recovery effort regardless of the season. The connection through the quiet, urban streets of Grappenhall provides a smooth transition between the two major waterways, keeping the rhythm consistent throughout the journey.
Steeped in industrial heritage, this route traverses areas that played a pivotal role in England's transport history. The Bridgewater Canal, often called the "Duke's Canal," was the first true canal in England, and running its banks offers a glimpse of traditional narrowboats and ivy-clad bridges. The Trans-Pennine Trail section follows a defunct railway line, where the Victorian engineering now serves as a lush green corridor for local wildlife. Between the charming sandstone cottages of Grappenhall and the vibrant village atmosphere of Lymm, runners will experience the quintessential Cheshire landscape—a perfect mix of peaceful waterways and historic village charm that has remained popular with local harriers for decades.
