Route Overview & Local Insights

This 9.3km loop through the North Pennines offers a rewarding challenge for runners who love a steady ascent and technical variety. Starting from Stanhope, you'll tackle a persistent 5km climb toward the summit of Collier Law, gaining over 300 meters of elevation throughout the run. The terrain is a classic moorland mix, featuring roughly 25% paved surfaces transitioning into grassy singletrack and rugged trails. Once you crest the summit at over 500 meters, the final 4km is a fast, flowing descent that allows you to open up your stride and enjoy the momentum back toward the finish. Given the exposed nature of the high ground, be prepared for shifting winds and rapid weather changes typical of the Durham Dales.

Stanhope is often referred to as the "Capital of Weardale," a historic market town deeply rooted in the lead mining and quarrying industries of County Durham. Running this route connects you to a landscape shaped by centuries of geology and labor; keep an eye out for the Fossil Tree near the town center, a 320-million-year-old relic of the Carboniferous period. Collier Law itself provides some of the most expansive panoramic views in northern England, stretching across the rugged moorlands that define this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a quintessential British uplands experience, where the transition from the sheltered valley floor to the wild, open heights of the Pennines happens in just a few short kilometers.
