Tucked away in the eastern reaches of the North Pennines, this 12.7km loop through Hamsterley Forest offers runners a quintessential woodland trail experience. With a total ascent of 205m, this route is classified as a category 3 hilly run, featuring no paved sections—purely forest tracks and natural surfaces. You will navigate a steady climb through towering pines for the first half of the run, reaching the peak elevation around the 6km mark. From there, the terrain rewards your effort with a thrilling, sustained descent that allows for a fast finish back to the trailhead, making it an excellent session for building sustained aerobic power and downhill technique.
Hamsterley Forest is County Durham's largest woodland, spanning over 2,000 hectares of diverse habitat. Historically, much of the area was transformed by the Forestry Commission in the 1920s, but today it is a premier destination for off-road athletes. Local runners often share the trails with mountain bikers and the occasional red deer, particularly during the quieter early morning hours. After conquering the "thrilling hilly loop," many athletes head to the local Bedburn area to cool down by the beck. The forest's unique microclimate can be significantly cooler than nearby Darlington or Bishop Auckland, so always carry a light layer for this undulating canopy covered route.
