This 6.5km loop offers an incredibly smooth and accessible running experience through the heart of the Derwent Valley in Gateshead. With a modest ascent of just 32m and a predominantly paved surface, it is an ideal choice for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or enjoy a recovery effort in a tranquil setting. Starting near the Swalwell Visitor Centre, the anti-clockwise circuit hugs the banks of the River Derwent, guiding you through a lush green corridor. The highlight of the run is crossing the impressive Swalwell Viaduct, which provides a fantastic vantage point over the river before you loop back along the opposite bank toward the finish.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the Derwent Valley was once a powerhouse of coal mining and ironworking, but today it has been reclaimed by nature as one of Gateshead's most beautiful public spaces. The Swalwell Viaduct itself is a remnant of the old Consett branch of the North Eastern Railway, now transformed into a vital link for the Reivers Cycle Route and local runners alike. As you navigate the trails, keep an eye out for Red Kites soaring above; these magnificent birds of prey were successfully reintroduced to the valley and have become a symbol of the area's ecological restoration. It is a peaceful, historic pocket of the North East that feels worlds away from the nearby urban bustle.
