This 12.1km scenic loop offers a refreshing blend of riverbank charm and woodland solitude. Starting near the historic market town of Barnard Castle, the route follows the winding path of the River Tees toward Cotherstone. While the 15% paved sections provide firm footing, much of the course takes you through dense, lush woods where the terrain is undulating but manageable, with a modest 64m total ascent. It is a moderately challenging run that rewards athletes with rhythmic water sounds and technical trail sections that keep your mind as engaged as your legs.
Runners will find themselves immersed in the deep history of Teesdale, passing through landscape that inspired the Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner. Cotherstone itself is famous for its namesake cheese and its traditional stone architecture, marking a quintessential North Pennines experience. This area, known as the "Gateway to the Fells," offers a unique microclimate that keeps the woodland paths vibrant year-round, though locals recommend trail shoes if the North East weather has been particularly damp. Finishing back toward "Barney," as the locals call it, you are perfectly positioned to explore the medieval ruins of Barnard Castle itself.
